Innovative solutions at IWA

Last Tuesday, Thomas took the rostrum at IWA. With the shortest imaginable time to speak, five minutes, he could only scratch the surface in his introduction of the company. Nevertheless, he put the message across to his audience about our values, quality, reliability and mutual respect, and our three most important export products: the sand washer and OXxOFF for utilities and industries, and the sand-slurry separator for cattle farmers with sand in the stalls.

All three products point towards the UN Sustainable Development Goals and today’s exacting demands for innovative products that will benefit the climate and focus on TCO.

Stjernholm attends Cattle Congress with award-winning sand-slurry separator.

When we were awarded the 2020 European Business Award for the Environment, the panel of judges found that our installation is “a good example of circular economy resulting in large raw material savings and a significant CO2 reduction”.

Since then, the COVID-19 pandemic has prevented i.a. the traditional Cattle Congress, but on Monday, 2 May, we can once again meet Danish stock breeders, cattle consultants and biogas representatives to discuss the possibilities of both using sand in cubicles and delivering sand-free slurry for biogas production.

We will share a stand with Gråkjær that in many ways shares our beliefs and values within the environmental area, and we are looking forward to once again meeting people from the industry in person!

Tailored container solution for the new bottom aeration at the Stenløse treatment plant.

On a commission for Novafos A/S with Krüger Veolia as the consultants, we have recently installed and started up a completely new bottom aeration system in the process tank at the Stenløse treatment plant.
We won the contract with an offer in which price and delivery time were weighted with 40 %, energy consumption with 40 %, and technology and the working environment with 20 %.
Since there was no suitable building for the installation on the site, a tailored solution was chosen, in which the fans and other installations were mounted in an insulated container.
An optimal oxygen supply is secured by means of 200 plate aerators, which are supplied with oxygen from two Kaeser rotary blowers. We have experience of impressively good results from this solution. With minimal maintenance and cleaning with formic acid, it should ensure optimal aeration in the process tank for at least the next 15 years.

Now Stjernholm also washes sand in Stoholm

At the treatment plant at Stoholm, a completely new pre-treatment has been set up, with a new inlet and sand trap, and a new building for machinery. One of the new machines at the plant is a Stjernholm SR1900 sand washer, which is also a completely new installation at the plant.
This sand washer retains up to 90 % of sand particles > 125 µ from the inflow, and delivers the sand in a closed container, with a dry material content above 95 % and an organic content < 1 %. The high retention percent of sand ensures a reduction in deposition and transport, in turn reducing the total CO2 emissions from the plant. This counts even more at the Stoholm treatment plant, which has not previously had a sand washer installed. EnergiViborg has experience from sand washers operating at some of its other treatment plants, where the efficiency and stable operation of the Stjernholm sand washer was convincing. The call for tenders also attached considerable importance to TCO, and our sand washer with a lifetime of 15-20 years and an estimated payback period of 2-5 years also scored well in connection with the award. Optimising the sand trap is one of our specialities.

Large quantities of sand are carried into a treatment plant in the first flow, making heavy demands on the plant’s sand trap. Århus Vand had therefore called for tenders to optimise the sand trap at the Egå treatment Plant – and we won the tender.
The invitation to tender included replacing and optimising the machine installations such as gears, axles, gear rim, grease separator trolley and mammoth pumps.
In our assessment, great emphasis was placed on the solution with a freely mobile mammoth pump with a tilt sensor, which ensures stable operation when exceptionally large quantities of sand are fed into the plant.
The assignment focused strongly on optimal efficiency in daily servicing and maintenance. One element in meeting this challenge was a central lubrication point located on sand trap bridge.

We’re in a strong position when TCO counts in the tender!

We have recently won several assignments where TCO – Total Cost of Ownership – was a priority in the call for tenders. One example was the delivery of a new SR 1600 sand washer for the treatment plant at Egå. The new sand washer replaces a smaller SR 800, which we delivered as long ago as 2000! And the old one was only replaced because over time it had become necessary to increase the sand-washing capacity.

The new sand washer is now installed and ready to treat the increased quantities of sand from the first flow. When tested, it was shown to live completely up to the guaranteed levels of > 95 % dry matter and > 1 % organic material in the retained sand. The same applies to the retention of sand, which is above 90 %.

“In fact the earlier sand washer was only our sixth sand washer ever, when we installed it at the Egå treatment plant more than 20 years ago,” says Kaj Stjernholm with obvious pride. “Even then, we guaranteed a lifetime of 15-20 years with an estimated payback period of 3-5 years. Time has shown that our promises were kept, so that places us in a really strong position today when retention, dry matter content, the content of organic material and TCO are priorities in the call for tenders.”

Stjernholm – a climate-ready SME

In cooperation with DI – Confederation of Danish Industry, we have completed a consultancy process that ended at the end of 2021 and that determined the baseline for the company’s carbon footprint.

Stjernholm’s first CO2 accounts have now been prepared and will be included in our climate strategy to benefit customers, society and Stjernholm.

Lowering the company flag.

Kaj’s last task at Birkmosevej in Ringkøbing was to lower the company flag. The lowering also marks the end of a chapter in the company’s history: Since the beginning 24 years ago, the domicile has been located in Ringkøbing.

The next chapter will be written in Randers – at Langelandsvej 4A where production, sales and administration have all been combined at one address since 1 November. You are always welcome to stop by!

– Although moving so far away from “home” is a little sad, I can already tell that having everyone gathered under one roof makes sense, said Kaj Stjernholm before he handed over the domicile to its new owners, tucked the company flag under his arm and took it to Randers.

An exciting year with plenty of new and interesting tasks is now awaiting until the company can celebrate its 25th anniversary on 30 September, less than a year from now. True to the Stjernholm spirit, plenty of festivity has already been planned on that occasion – till then, we hope that you’ll participate in our anniversary competition: We’ll draw lots for a bottle of Stjernholm rum on the last day of each month throughout the anniversary year.

Already in 2009, we offered utility companies a helping hand with their CO2 reduction.

A change of address is always a good opportunity to clean up. When we relocated our administration and sales from Ringkøbing to Randers, we came across the above poster.

It is from our common stand at Vandtek 2009 in Odense where we worked with the then Dong Energy, DHI, Picca and Orbicon and offered a free review of plants with focus on CO2 reductions.

Unfortunately, our initiative back then was no success. We might have been ahead of our time – or EU procurement rules were in the way. And challenges have not grown less since then!

Fortunately, we now have our OXxOFF meter and other good products to contribute to solving the task!

The difference is more than 30%!

In cooperation with the utility company of Vesthimmerlands Forsyning, aeration at the sewage treatment plant of Farsø Renseanlæg has been closely inspected and optimised.

In fact, we believed that the existing system was all right and that it primarily needed cleaning and general maintenance, but unfortunately, it turned out that some of the mounting had been bent which highly affected efficiency.

The necessary adjustments have now been made, and the result is quite astonishing: The energy consumption for aeration has been reduced by more than 30%!

That feels good both in terms of finances and the CO2 accounts!

Stjernholm is gathering all good energies in Randers.

The adventure started 24 years ago. Kaj Stjernholm Sørensen from Højmark became self-employed, based in Ringkøbing.

Since then, Stjernholm has had various addresses in Ringkøbing, but that is now a thing of the past. The domicile at Birkmosevej 1 has been emptied – sales and administration were moved to Randers where our production facilities have already been placed for a number of years.

– We are looking forward to having sales, project, production and administration all at one address, says Kaj with a hint of sadness in his voice. – Ringkøbing will always hold a special place in my heart, but at some point, the practical aspect will have to rule over your feelings, and that point is now, he continues. – In fact, we only had one employee left in Ringkøbing, so the majority of our employees are now closer to work. Covid-19 also taught us to be more flexible when it comes to working from home and going directly to the customers. –

On Monday, 1 November, we will be settled in the new premises at Langelandsvej 4A in the southwestern outskirts of Randers. You are always welcome to stop by for a cup of coffee and a productive dialogue.

Stjernholm is offering Zusammenarbeit mit Wert to German municipalities.

Germans have recently been showing considerable interest in our products, and we are therefore represented on the Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ joint stand at the Kommunale trade fair in Nürnberg.

Interest has focused especially on our sand washer and our OXxOFF measuring equipment for controlling aeration in process tanks. So Caspar Juul Rasmussen is now in position to provide Cooperation with Value for German municipalities.
